Design, Dating and Disillusionment: If Only She Had Told Me She Could Work Me Like a Ball-Peen Hammer!
By Heather Murphy
(page 2 of 3)Lizzie: He was there before me and it was a little awkward. I was pleasantly surprised—he is an attractive man…very stylish.
Anthony: I had three Long Island [iced teas]. …We played it pretty safe, didn’t get into family, religion, politics. It worked out really nice. She is a designer and she is really interested in coming to my fashion shows. [Age] never [came up], which was surprising.
Lizzie: I had one glass of wine—probably should have had more. He is really easy to talk to. Age is nothing to me; I like older men. He went to the same [fashion] school I went to for six months. He said it was a waste of his time and suggested I go somewhere else.
Anthony: The school she is going to is a total scam. [I told her] you should go to the [second] one I went to.
Lizzie: He does fashion shows all the time and shoots and stuff. I asked him if he needed any interns or anything. He said, “I will take you under my wing and I will show you the entire world of fashion.” I was kind of stunned and numbed at the same time. It worked out so well!
Anthony: We were talking about the movie Zodiac. I said, “If you are up for it…” I think that was before the kid thing.
The “Kid Thing”
“I have twins, Gemini twins,” Lizzie said, boldly but with a smidge of trepidation.
[Silence; A long silence…]
“Nice,” Anthony finally chokes out. “Do you want dessert?” A Death Valley of silence…
Anthony: When she told me she had two kids—I didn’t really know what to say. I didn’t make it obvious, but that just killed it— like a punch in the stomach.
Lizzie: He just stayed quiet and then he changed the subject. [That made me] a little bit concerned. [Guys] have never said, “I don’t want to be involved” [because of the kids]. They see how far they can handle it. If they can’t, they start picking fights with me.
Anthony: I think it’s admirable that she is going to school, rather than waiting for a sugar daddy. But if I have a choice between a woman who has never had kids or luggage and a woman who has already been married with kids, that is my preferred choice. You can’t waste time.
Lizzie: It ended in the restaurant. He had to go and I had to go. He gave me his card and he told me to look him up on MySpace, so that he could add me and we could go from there.
Order Dessert or Grab The Check?
The Day After
Despite the awkward post-kid-announcement silence, Lizzie was not aware that Anthony was no longer interested. “He kept saying we should go to a movie,” she said, even after she told him about her twins.
Asked if she would prefer to date him or become his intern, she says, “Both. I think I could handle both.”
Meanwhile, Anthony claimed that his invitation to go out again “was more like a buddy going to a movie.” He said he is still recovering from the “shocker” that the “young, pretty girl” in skin-tight leggings is a mama. He’d want to see her again, but because of her “luggage,” at most it would be as a fashion mentor.
That is until the D-word was dropped.
