You Go Girl: Stefy Takes on LA from the OC
By Mar Yvette
(page 1 of 1)Take one girlishly sexy frontwoman, two recurrent themes (boys and breakups), and three synth-pop-playing guys and you’ve got Stefy, the latest Orange County band to break through the gilded gates of Hollywood.
Since debuting with The Orange Album last August, the group has steadily racked up new fans with catchy ’80s throwbacks like the sample-heavy “Chelsea” and “Love You to Death.” Bolivian Irish songstress Stefy Rae Eunace, 21, dishes on music, fashion and inevitable comparisons to that other girl-fronted band from the OC.
Going in you must have known you’d get a lot of comparisons to No Doubt. They’re definitely an influence on us, and I do look up to Gwen Stefani, but I’m not in the studio saying, “What would Gwen Stefani do? How could this song sound more like No Doubt?” Our sound is who we are.
Has your popularity grown mostly through word of mouth and live shows? A lot of it has been through our shows and people telling their friends. But it all kind of started with our MySpace page.
The shout out on Perez Hilton’s blog certainly didn’t hurt. How’d you manage that? I heard he was in London at the same time we were and he saw us on TV and I guess he liked us. It was cool for him to write something nice about us. It could have gone in the other direction.
You obviously love fashion. How important is image? It’s definitely important. I love wearing costumes, dressing up and doing everything big. I’m a girl–I love getting dolled up and going on stage.
OC or LA? They’re two different worlds and I love them equally. I lived in Studio City for a little bit and it was strange to see kids dress up to go grocery shopping. In Orange County, they’re out the door in pajamas and flip-flops.
