The Rise of Rue Melo

By Jenn Chu

Stylish, with an appealing blend of hip hop, soul funk and rock, Rue Melo is rocking the LA music scene with major star potential.

When you first hear Rue Melo you are struck by the band’s coherent unity and their ability to blend music into one sound of hip hop, soul funk, and rock. Each band member contributes a style drawing on rich backgrounds to the overall effect of the band, and you can’t ignore the outcome of their creativity.

The band members include Rue Melo, Idris Tate, Martin Estrada, and Bryan Bush. Rue, singer and songwriter of much of the music, grew up in Paris. She incorporates English, French, and Spanish into her music. Idris is the drummer, Martin is the guitarist, and Bryan is the bassist. Their backgrounds may vary, but their devotion to music doesn’t and it’s perfected by extensive studying of the medium.

Each of the member’s parents were musicians who instilled in them a love for creating music that not only moves the soul but leaves an impression. Together, they are able to fuse their talents into creating a sound unique that’s different.

With musical influences The Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Bob Marley, Amy Winehouse, Sublime, and Alicia Keyes, their musical tastes are reflected in their marketable yet untouched sound. With a fresh, innovative style you want to dance to their music and not just stand in a corner drinking your beer.

At first glance, Rue strikes you with natural effervescence, and when she sings she emotes maturity beyond her 23 years of age. She sings about feelings and issues that pierce the soul, and her whole heart pulls musical notes out while permeating the audience. The group exudes an energetic, rock-band look with frontwoman Rue’s quintessential wife-beater and the band’s each-their-own sartorial style. They’re a band that appreciates where they are, without taking anything for granted.

Their hard work, talent, and perseverance will propel them into a fortuitous future. They make each day count, even if it means going to bed as the sun is coming up, waking up to practice, or doing a show at 5 am.

Athenians were really into music back in the days of ancient Greece. If they could, I think they would be really into what Rue Melo has created and produced these days, rocking out to the kind of music that Rue proclaims, “to drop it like it’s hot even if your grandma’s in the front row.” I’m pretty sure they will have a huge fan base, whether you’re an Athenian, a grandmother, or a teenybopper.
