First Friday’s a Must

Kicking off the First Fridays (www.nhm.org/firstfridays) of each month, The Natural History Museum hosted an exciting evening of history, food, and music.

Friday, February 8 marked an exceptional performance by the talented A-Track (www.myspace.com/djatrak) and the beautiful Kid Sister (www.myspace.com/kidsister).

In a room surrounded by some of the most realistic wild animals, a sense of excitement filled my mind. Throwing out the beats, A-Track beings his DJ set by instantly getting the crowd dancing.

As Willy Mammoths pose motionless behind stage, the crowd pushed closer with each seamless electronic mix.

Once the crowd found their rhythm, Kid Sister hopped on stage, which set off a chain of screams from her beloved fans. One of the hottest female rappers around, Kid Sister jumped into the crowd dancing and ripping down the barricade between her and the stage.

Posted up on the side of the stage, Kid Sister’s energy filled my feet so I could begin to groove on. A truly intimate show, the most amazing part was Kid Sister’s generosity and kindness to her fans. Not afraid to interact with the audience, Kid Sisters took off into the crowd posing for pictures and mingling with her fans while A-Track continued turning out the beats.

A short while later she returned on stage as the two ended the night with a few last songs. Stay tune for updates from the next First Friday, which features electronic tunes by Yacht (www.myspace.com/yacht).

Jan 25: High Places/The Blow/Mirah

Sitting on the floor and waiting anxiously with a friend, there are a few words to describe how I am feeling: cold but excited, calm yet frenzied. It’s Friday night at the Henry Fonda Theater and the The Blow and Mirah are performing. Both artists are consistently bursting with fresh beats and soothing voices. To start off, High Places (Mary Pearson and Robert Barber) open up with a combination of tribal beats, a xylophone, and some faint voices. The outcome is a light, funky beat that is easy to listen to and sway.

After a break, The Blow performs; as usual, the performance is memorable and entertaining. Everyone begins dancing to the synthetic offbeat lyrics of Khaela Maricich’s songs including “Hey Boy” and “True Affection”. The one-person performance, or Khaela herself, was not only able to capture her fan’s hearts, but capture the laughter provoked by her own intricate and unusual jokes and comments about the process of songwriting and wanting.
