Everyone Love a Good Show

By Vincent Uribe

Lastly, Mirah closed the night with immense grace and clarity. Without fail, each song was as mellow as it was practically ear candy to each and every person. Her songs were not only quirky pieces of serene melodies, but an exceptional masterpiece regarding her diverse all star band. It was once the performance was over and the fans begin to scurry out the door, I could not help but think, surely there was no other night as engaging as this cold night in January.

RRIICCEE

December 22, 2007–Actor Vincent Gallo and Eric Erlandson’s new music project RRIICCEE performed to a sit-down audience at an Echo Park art space.

Originally scheduled for 7 pm at the Rec Center Studios in Echo Park, there was a last minute change of plans which drove curious fans to The Echo at 8:30 pm. Gallo—infamously known for movies Buffalo 66 and The Brown Bunny—has teamed up with Eric Erlandson (former guitarist of Hole, which included Courtney Love) and musicians Rebecca Casabian and Nikolas Haas to form RRIICCE. The result: an experimental group that ad libs most of their music and is not limited to the boundaries of one specific musical genre.

At the present, RRIICCEE has no recorded music and no plans for recording a commercial release. Although they created quite a pleasing melancholy sound, there was little crowd recognition on this particular evening. In a room of die hard fans I found it a little upsetting to have Gallo’s back facing the crowd the whole show.

At the end, he gave only a simple “thank you”. Meanwhile, posters were being sold for an outrageous $100 and T-shirts were no cheaper at $50.

The Future of Music Looks Like This

Barcelona/New York-based Prefuse 73 attracted a wide range of fans Sunday, December 9 at The Troubadour. Scott Herren (as seen in the winter beanie), leads the sound that combines electronic music with hip-hop. Incorporating live music with electronic mixing, Prefuse 73 is known for their choppy, eclectic songs.

Voxtrot Runs Their Own MySpace and Puts on a Good Show

There was an excited crowd at The Henry Fonda Music Box this past Sunday, Dec. 2, where Voxtrot delivered an outstanding live performance. With a comforting feel and a classic rhythm, their songs brought energy to the show and got the audience to sing along.
