Is "Green" The New Black?

By Megan Mooren

The looming issue facing today’s world (besides the obvious like healthcare or unbelievably high gas prices) is of course the environment. While taking care of our natural resources was once a whispered voice, it is now being screamed loud and clear.

So, we recycle, take shorter showers, and turn off the lights when we eave the room. To some, that just isn’t enough. Next that word “organic” came into not only our vocabulary but our foods and household cleaners. It looks like LA’s fashion scene has decided to jump on this new bandwagon — “green” designers and clothing lines are popping up everywhere, including at LA’s Fashion Week.

Why go organic with your clothing? Can this really help our environment? The former fabric of choice, cotton, accounts for 25% of all agricultural pesticides used in the U.S. One-third of a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used to grow each pound. One pound of cotton is equivalent to one cotton tee-shirt. Now think about how many cotton tee’s are mass produced every year in LA — in the US!

OK, if you are at all like me, and taking care of our planet isn’t exactly as high on your list of priorities as say, looking good and having cute clothes that everyone envies, rest easy, because you are in luck. As I mentioned earlier, many designers are starting to believe that “Green” is the new black by manufacturing special organic hemp and bamboo product clothing that looks cool, hip and stylish.

The organic company featured here is under the talented wings of designer Maia Anderson. It is called Convoy and it offers both men and women’s designs with a children’s line in the works. The collection is called “Sustainable Collective” and has been featured in Lucky Magazine and a recent runway show for the “Invisible Children Fundraiser” last week. These all-organic and bamboo pieces are so trendy, everyone will be wondering who you are wearing. Since the fibers are 100% natural organic, you will be comfortable. I can honestly say from experience (I do own a few pieces by Convoy) that you can sleep in these babies as well as go to work in them — they’re that comfy! So was Kermit the Frog wrong? Is it in fact easy being green? I believe it’s not only easy, but very stylish as well.

Men’s and women’s styles from Convoy are shown here. Check out their website, www.convoyapparel.com. For local LA folks who use shopping on foot as their cardio workout, you can visit Avita Co-Op on W. 3rd Street in LA.
