Superheroes at Inglewood’s Darby Skate Park

(page 2 of 2)The city held its second annual Inglewood Games Skate Jam on April 14. The event typically attracts teenagers from all over the South Bay, and features Olympic-style skateboarding competitions, says Gough, who also founded Inglewood’s skateboarding team, Team Took.
Skateboarding sponsors sometimes come to such events to scout out fresh faces. Clark says he’s hoping to land a DGK (“Dirty Ghetto Kids”) sponsorship, with a skateboarding crew founded by Stevie Williams in Philadelphia.
Clark considers himself one of the lucky ones since, he says, many times people claiming to be legitimate sponsors take advantage of young skaters’ interests, recruiting them to sell candy bars or other items to make a quick buck for themselves.
“Some of the guys who were coming here were let down,” Clark says. “After that, they stopped coming.”
Clark knows that he has a big opportunity. But what does his mother think?
“She doesn’t think skateboarding is gonna get me anywhere. I can’t wait until Saturday when I can rub it in her face,”he says.
He didn’t mention Saturday’s events, so as not to jinx himself. But you’d better believe it has something to do with ramps and wheels.
