Tennis has a long, storied history in Los Angeles, and what is now known as the Countrywide Classic has been a part of it since 1927. On August 4-10, 2008, the 82nd annual Countrywide Classic will mark the 25th anniversary of the event being contested at Straus Stadium. Located on the beautiful UCLA campus nestled just west of Pauley Pavilion and south of Drake Stadium the tournament has remained one of the top Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) men’s tournaments in the United States featuring a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles competition. The landmark Southern California ATP tournament is the longest running annual professional sporting event in Los Angeles, and offers total player compensation in excess of $1 million. Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic turned back American star James Blake to capture the singles title last year while American twin stars and World’s No. 1 doubles team Bob and Mike Bryan won their record-breaking fourth doubles crown. countrywideclassic.com
