4 Dollar Tamales? HELL NO!!!

Posted by mrbirdsnest

If you're gonna' buy tamales, Keep It Real, Foo'!!

So, Available at any farmer’s market, or other meeting point of those interested in “authentic” experience, there are huge tamales for sale. These hulking, masa-heavy thangs are usually at least four bucks and even go up to, like, SIX dollars. This is a whole lot of crazy, people! Go to a panaderia and buy the slender, filling heavy tamales that fit into your hand. They shouldn’t be more than $1.50. The real reason to get them is not that they are less expensive, it is because they are moister and sincerely authentic. Just because the gourmet tamale makers use Blue corn dough, doesn’t mean that that is the realest masa on the market. Real tamales are made in a dingy basement, with a single swinging lightbulb, and are forged by the hands of a woman with no less than 35 grandchildren. If you can’t find that, then just go someplace that has Jarritos in a cooler, along with pan dulce in plastic bags. And if you can’t find that, then I don’t know where you think you are living, but it’s not LA.

But as any Mexican will tell you, no tamale can compare to Grandma's tamales! ;)
