Although there is a fashion/sneaker community reference @ hypebeast.com....the actual definition of the word is taken to be negative...
The urban dictionary defines this to be: 1. Sneakerheads who only rock hyped up shit to get props b/c they got no self worth or sense of style. 2. 50% of NikeTalk members 3.A person who follows a trend to be cool or in style. 4. A person who wears what is hyped up
There have been other definitions in other contexts as well. In the period of time just before the release of a piece of clothing/sneaker it is referred to as something intangible, something being created by the snowball effect of buzz surrounding this release. In an attempt to tame the beast, many will choose from discussing the release whatsoever. There are a few questions. Is the readily accessible “information-superhighway” to blame? And what about the non- follower? I mean companies Nike probably doesn’t need to advertise the shit half the time. Recently a friend of mine had an interesting experience where some “sneakerheads” were camping outside a store in Long Beach awaiting the release of the Jordan I OLNL double pack. He loves fashion and happened to be wearing a print collared shirt, jeans and a pair of Bathing Ape shoes. He calmly asked, “Hey guys, what shoe you standing in line for?” The question was met with a demeaning reply. As if to say “you have Bapes on, you should know!” Just out of curiosity. When did buying a certain type of shoe make it mandatory to know everything in the shoe world!?

I believe that the younger generation is embracing the same shoe culture that a lot of us mid 20s to young 30s peeps originally grew up with, but for different reasons. You see, us older peoples are reminiscing about those shoes we grew up with, that maybe we couldn't afford as a kid, or rather our parents wouldn't even dare to spend more than $40 on some shoes, knowing that we would just ruin them by playing kickball or football at school. Now that nobody can tell us what to do with our money, we can buy all the Jordans and other shoes that we loved to have as a kid. The younger generation of kids competing for these shoes these days, ones still in high school, and junior high that I might add, are simply following a trend that they see, and want to be a part of. Nike can also be to blame, as they seem to make more and more limited release shoes than ever, and thus allowing retailers like Salvatory, to sell their Jordans for $100 markup on MSRP, no lie! We can also blame each other for spending hundeds of dollars for a pair of shoes on internet forums, and of course, eBay, the standard for finding the market value for anything that you want to sell. Just see what others are paying! Anyways, I too am a victim to this senseless habit, I mean hobby =-), so I should just shut up, and enjoy all my shoes in their boxes, never being un-DS'd, in fear that they will go up in price, ridiculously, like some other kicks that everyone knows of. No need to mention those shoes...
i was there Posted by jaw of life 437 days ago
i was camped out for the OLNL pack. i was surprised to see how many kids were out. and some with their parents! that's love. i couldn't even get my mom to buy the shoes. i'd heard there would be lines, but i was hoping the fact that it was 4/20 would slow some people up. however, i underestimated our youth of today. me and the homie had a good time running around all night, but the shoe game is a young man's sport. call me old school but how is a kid can be out all night with 200 bucks in his pocket. who is coaching? when i was in high school there was no camping out. you showed up at the store when it opened and you were pretty much guaranteed a pair. that night half the people in line weren't even buying them to wear. they were there to add to their collection or to resale... we had baseball cards, today kids collect $100-200 shoes. sneakerhead = spoiled brat
