What do the people do when the same system set up to protect and serve a community, actually harm and brutalize it?
Having received word from my sister, who actively walked out of high school May 1st to stand up for immigrant rights, that the downtown protest was mostly peaceful, I must admit I was a little surprised. I knew cops were out full force, just waiting for one little slip by a hyped up to pounce
It wasn’t until later on that day, when protesters made their way to MacArthur Park, that violence struck. But the turmoil wasn’t brought on by any revolutionary spirit caught slippin’. No, it was the L.A.P.D. who perpetrated rage against citizens exercising the First Amendment.
The police fired approximately 240 rubber bullets at demonstrators. And video images, which were broadcast worldwide, prove it. Authorities have launched several investigations into the L.A.P.D. and the FBI said Thursday that it would open a civil rights inquiry into officers’ conduct.
According one news release, the preliminary inquiry seeks to determine “whether the civil rights of protesters taking part in the May 1st immigration rally were violated.”
The FBI probe is the fourth official investigation of the incident. The Police Department opened two investigations almost immediately after the violence, one to create an “after-action report” that evaluates planning and operations, and another by internal affairs to probe complaints against officers.
So how will LA’s notorious peace keepers get out of this one? No one really knows for sure. But the fact remains that because many of those protesting might be here “illegally”, the L.A.P.D. probably went out there thinking they could get away with hurting them. After all, they’re only here to hold up the economy anyways.
