Youth Graffiti Arts Blast - OCT 6, 2007
Posted by burningstar
The goal of the Walls to Canvas Graffiti Arts Blast is show the brilliant street style artwork of at-risk youth on Saturday October 6th, 2007 from 3:00-8:00pm!
The Walls2Canvas project gives voice to the rising number of youth that are using vandalism as a rite of passage because they lack a sense of personal value. They “tag” to create an identity. Walls2Canvas re-teaches youth to view themselves as artists and entrepreneurs, not vandals. Our MOSAIC after-school partner sites are receiving an influx of taggers because the Los Angeles Police Department and city officials are labeling them as gang members and implementing tougher punishment, including more probation. Holding this Arts Blast at the Cal State Northridge Art Gallery will increase the youths’ sense of accomplishment and help them visualize themselves as college students. In addition to the graffiti art pieces on canvas, the youth also create designs on t-shirts, canvas bags, shoes, and hats. The introduction of the waste vegetable oil school bus to the art show will be an exciting addition to this year’s art show. The youth will do a live graffiti art piece on the bus as a way to highlight that it was converted from dirty diesel to cleaner burning waste vegetable oil collected from restaurants.
